THE Port Macquarie Memory Walk and Jog is just eight weeks away and Alzheimer’s Australia NSW needs your help to make it happen.
Volunteers just like Kate Whillock are needed to help make Memory Walk and Jog the successful, fun and community-spirited event that it is.
The 25-year-old from Port Macquarie has been helping organise Memory Walk and Jog and gaining valuable on-the-job experience to complement her studies in event management at TAFE.
“When I saw what was involved, it sounded perfect,” Kate said.
“My nan actually has dementia. I was able to get the experience I needed and I’m involved in a cause that affects me and lots of others. If you’re thinking about being involved just do it, it will be a lot of fun. Volunteering is such a rewarding experience and Memory Walk and Jog is such a great cause to be involved with.”
Kate has been handing out flyers at markets on the weekend, helping answer email inquiries in the Port Macquarie office and will be rolling her sleeves up on Memory Walk and Jog day to help make sure everything runs smoothly.
Port Macquarie Memory Walk and Jog will be held at Westport Park in Port Macquarie on Sunday 31 August. Participants can choose from a 2km walk, a 7.5km walk or a 7.5km run.
Port Macquarie Memory Walk and Jog is Alzheimer’s Australia NSW’s major fund-raising event and contributes to support education and advocacy services for the estimated 1700 people living with dementia in Port Macquarie.
Volunteers are needed to help with a range of activities on the day like course marshalling, directional marshalling, handing out drinks to the walkers and runners, manning stalls and of course cheering on participants as Memory Walk and Jog takes place.
