The Gingerbread Lady is open to the public from Friday 11 July at 8pm and will run until Sunday 27 July for nine performances. Book online at playerstheatre.org, at the theatre or the Glasshouse.
The play written by Neil Simon (The Odd Couple, The Goodbye Girl), originally opened on Broadway in 1970 and has been awarded numerous awards included the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award.
Directed by Di Gillies, The Gingerbread Lady follows the highs and lows of Evy, an alcoholic singer who is trying to get her life back on track after a stint in rehab. Friends Toby and Jimmy and Evy’s daughter, Polly, endeavour to help her adjust to sobriety, but all have the opposite effect.
Evy’s boyfriend, Lou, calls it quits. A birthday party is a wash-out. Toby has problems, Jimmy loses his stage role and Polly can’t seem to connect with Evy. As a result it’s a short journey for Evy off the wagon and into a very dark space with everyone desperate to find answers. What will happen to Evy and can she return to the life she had before the booze took over?
