A WAUCHOPE couple have called for a rethink on their bus system.
Retirees Rosanna and John van der Ley said some of the drivers were as confused as the passengers about where to stop given the lack of signage.
Mr van der Ley, 92, who walks with the aid of a cane, was left standing in the street recently when a driver would not stop at a regular unmarked bus stop.
This is the second time this has happened to him.
Luckily, a woman driving a car nearby this time spotted his plight and gave him a lift to a street corner near his home, saving him a two-kilometre walk.
Part of the reason for the confusion is that bus routes were revamped last year but proper signage has not yet been installed.
Mrs van der Ley said bus operator Busways seemed unable to fix the problem.
“I’m sure that the council and Busways have passengers’ best interests at heart but the present stop in Cameron Street, outside the St Vincent de Paul shop, has no sign or seats and no room, so the drivers risk being moved on by police if they stop there and also the elderly have nowhere to sit and wait,” she said.
“Further problems are the need for a bus service to the hospital and library.”
The van der Leys have written several letters to newspapers and one letter to the council but have still to see any concrete action to solve the problems.
