Cordy takes role at the top

GREAT to see Brian Cordy taking a role at the Footscray VFL side in 2014. “Toby” was a very good player in his day (124 games) and if you talk to those that played with him, they will always talk about him as a great team man. His background of coaching in Geelong at TAC Cup and local level plus at Geelong College will be of great benefit. His role is to oversee the coaching staff on match days and to share his experience and knowledge to the playing group.

GOOD to see some local WRFL faces signed to the Bulldogs including Jesse Fortune (Glenorden), Jase Perkins (Port Colts), Todd Finco (Albion) Christian Elliot ande Michael Fogarty (Spotswood). All five had the talent to make it at VFL level and their local clubs can only benefit from the experience they will bring back. Both Werribee and Williamstown also have a pathway for local players to be part of their clubs so there has never been more opportunities for players to step to the next level.

THE Wyndham Suns is another new club in the area with its home ground at Goddard Reserve in Tarneit. The club used to be based at Westbourne College as Old Westbourne. The launch of the club and registration day will take place this Sunday 9 February at the Tarneit Community Centre from 1.30pm. The club will be fielding sides in the WRFL under-9s through to under-16s with a Youth Girls and Women’s team as well. The seniors will play in the VAFA. Their senior coach is Phillip Ballis and Brad Gilham will be coaching the under-19s. Like all clubs these days they are active on social media, so check them out.

THE Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club past players day is coming up this Saturday at Hogans Road when the seniors will take on Old Mentonians. Rodney Malcolm Hogg spoke at the club last weekend and from all reports went down a treat. The fact I work with Hoggy each week on SEN, it does not come as a surprise, as he is a very funny man. Past players like myself. Stuart Broad and Fawed Ahmed can enjoy a barbecue lunch and a few cold ales at a very reasonable price. The Hoppers Sports Club Awards night is coming up on 22 February at the Racing Club which I am proud to be hosting once again. For bookings and details contact Darren Hellman on 0413 607 645.

CLEARANCES have opened in all footy competitions and now we find out the real from the unreal. There is so much tripe bandied about at this time of the year it is not funny. Can’t wait to sort the wheat from the chaff.

THE 13th Annual Peter Bunworth Memorial Match between Hoppers Crossing and Wyndhamvale again proved to be a tense last-man-standing affair. After a slow start, the Vales finished with 114 from their 20 overs which most thought was about 20 runs short of what would be required. In the chase, Hoppers lost regular wickets due to the wicket keeping low, poor shot selection and three stupid run-outs to slump to 9/86 before ‘Grimace’ Mitchell 53 not out and ‘Puff Diddy’ Dowling 20 not out got Hoppers over the line. Hoppers now lead 7-6 in the overall standings in what was a great day in honour of a great man. Shaun Mould (Mouldy) was the stand-out player for the Vales while Grimace got the job done for Hoppers.
