EGGS were a recipe for success for award-winning writer Marie James.
The St Albans resident came first in the adult section of this year’s Brimbank Short Story and Poetry awards.
Ms James’ story ‘Eggs’followed the deterioration of a relationship, using thefood as a symbol for thecouple.
When asked about her strange decision to use eggs in her story, she said it was part of a university lecture when her tutor called on students to write an impromptu piece.
“The teacher wrote eggs on the board and I used it as a prompt for my piece,” Ms James said.
The 20-year-old has taken a break from her studies to begin writing her first novel, which she described as a “kind of chick flick”, where the good girl goes after the bad boy. She hopes this first novel is the beginning of a successful writing career.
Ms James said she first realised she had a flair for writing as a teenager, when she became engrossed in books and decided to put pen to paper.
“It’s the one thing I can do well and the one thing I really enjoy.
“It’s a way to escapereality and make your own reality.”
