Lost super accounts for millions

By XAVIER SMERDON

HILLSIDE, Melton, Melton West and Kurunjang residents have more than $35 million in lost superannuation, according to figures released by the Australian Taxation Office.

Residents living in post codes 3037 and 3337 have a total of $36,697,586.92 in unclaimed super across 7527 lost accounts.

This adds up to an average of $4875 for each of the lost accounts in the area.

Across Melbourne’s West, residents have more than $331 million in unclaimed superannuation.

Rockbank, Plumpton, Brookfield and Melton South residents had almost $9 million lying dormant across 1991 accounts.

Deputy Commissioner for Superannuation Neil Olesen said reforms would make it easier for people to manage and keep track of their super.

Mr Olesen said as part of the reforms to super the ATO’s free search facility SuperSeeker has been improved to make it easier for people in Melton to find their lost and inactive accounts.

“While more Australians have successfully reclaimed lost super recently, there’s still plenty out there for people to find,” Mr Olesen said.

“SuperSeeker can help people to not only find lost super, but move money sitting in inactive accounts to one fund and save on fees and charges.”

One of the major reforms of SuperSeeker includes a search tool that will allow residents to use their tax file number to find their lost super.
