Grants give sporting chance to disabled

The Altona Netball Association and Altona North Bowls Club have been provided with funding to help disabled people access sport.

Hobsons Bay City Council has given more than $3700 in grants to the two clubs under a program designed to give people with a disability the chance to become involved with physical activities.

The netball club will run two six-week programs for school pupils with an intellectual disability followed by an interschool competition with Netball Victoria athletes.

The bowls club will receive $1000 to purchase modified bowls equipment to allow people with mobility disabilities to play the sport more easily.

The equipment will be placed on the council’s shared equipment register.

Hobsons Bay Mayor encouraged other clubs to apply for funding under the Access for All Abilities 2012-2013 program.

“These grants are a great way to increase the number of people with a disability participating in community based sport and recreation,” Councillor Altair said.

“We are proud of this program and committed to providing an inclusive community.”
