SCHOOL is back and police want motorists to know they will be there to catch anyone not obeying the speed limits and parking zones.
From the start of the first school term on 30 January to 1 February police will be rolling out operation School Zones.
Motorists are reminded that the numbers of children around schools increase especially between 8am and 9.30am and between 2.30pm and 4pm.
The operation, launched by the Melton and Brimbank Highway Patrol Units, is a clear reminder for drivers that school has returned and speed zones will be operating and enforced.
Illegal parking which is also becoming an issue around schools will also be targeted.
Melton Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said the operation will highlight safety in and around schools zones.
“Speed limits around schools have been established to reduce the risk of injury to young pedestrians, it is essential that drivers comply with these limits,” Snr Sgt Burbidge said.
He said school speed zones have not been in place over the school holidays and as a result some drivers can become complacent.
“Responsible drivers will understand that speed and parking restrictions around schools are there to protect children from injury.”
He said parking restrictions around schools aim to ensure that children can see traffic before stepping onto the road.
“Illegal parking causes congestion and makes it harder for motorists to see children who may be crossing the roads.”
