MELTON City Council staff, local Victoria Police members and Melton Family Violence Network members are taking a stand against family violence.

The group took part in the Walk Against Family Violence and Not 1 More events last Friday as part of White Ribbon Day activities.

The walk was one of many events held across the nation to raise awareness of White Ribbon Day, held annually on 25 November along with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The White Ribbon Day campaign works to prevent violence against women by encouraging people to take positive action to create change.

Melton City Council Mayor Kathy Majdlik said the council was proud to help raise awareness in the community.

“White Ribbon Day is an opportunity for the community to show support of eliminating violence against women,” Cr Majdlik said.

“One in three Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime. This is a frightening statistic and it could be your mother, sister, daughter or friend.”

White Ribbon Day bookmarks will be available from Caroline Springs and Melton libraries between 23 November and 10 December to mark the 16 Days of Activism campaign and support a stand against gender-based violence.

Residents are also encouraged to support the cause by purchasing a white ribbon or making a donation to the White Ribbon Foundation. For more information visit www.whiteribbon.org.au
